So to start with I explored the idea of
the lazy boss typed character whilst
obviously playing around with
proportions and appearances.

After the initial design sheets it was time to concentrate on head design, afterall this is the most attractive zone for the observer. By this point I was trying to find a hagged look as though to say this guy has been through a rough life and his skin complexity/facial appearance should reflect this.

More designs follow....

Coming up with the look of the face,
exploration of emotions was the
next stage.

By this point in the project James
identity had been narrowed down
and with final designs flowing in my
mind the use of character action
sheets like to the left was a
necessary approach in showing
how my character could be portrait
on screen etc.

Lastly came the turnaround.
With the turnaround complete
the character reflects an
appearance of a working middle
aged man with a scruffy edge to
him...precisely achieving the kind
of ideas I set out for.
